EE International Calls: Rates, Add-ons and the Cheapest Option

On an EE pay monthly plan, calls from the UK to long-haul countries such as India, Pakistan, Nigeria and the USA cost £4.64 a minute unless you add something to your plan. You do not need a new plan, but you almost certainly want an add-on: the £2.50 a month International Pass drops calls to India and the USA to 3p a minute. Pay as you go works differently, with lower standard rates and two £3 minute bundles.

All EE figures below come from EE's own pages, as of October 2026.

What EE charges with no add-on

These are the standard rates EE lists on its per-country "Call abroad from the UK" help pages. They apply to calls made from the UK to landlines and mobiles in that country. For these six countries, EE shows the same price for landlines and mobiles on both pay monthly and pay as you go.

Calling from the UK toPay monthly, per minutePay as you go, per minute
India£4.64£1.50
Pakistan£4.64£1.50
Nigeria£4.64£1.50
USA£4.64£1
Poland25p18p
Ireland25p18p

Source: EE's country pages, for example calling India from the UK, as of October 2026. Pick your country from the same section of EE's help site to see its rate.

Pay monthly costs three times as much as pay as you go for long-haul countries, because EE expects pay monthly customers to buy an add-on. Europe is cheap even without one, at 25p a minute or less.

EE's international add-ons compared

EE sells three monthly add-ons for calling abroad from the UK on pay monthly. All three recur every month and can be cancelled whenever you like. Prices are from EE's international calls page, as of October 2026.

Add-onMonthly priceWhat you getCountriesText this to 150
International Pass£2.50Discounted per-minute rates, from 3p65, including India, the USA, Pakistan, Nigeria, Poland and IrelandCALL ABROAD
The International add-on£15500 minutes (about 3p a minute)50, including the USA, India, Poland, Ireland and Nigeria500INTL1
The International Extra add-on£30250 minutes (about 12p a minute)100, including Pakistan, the UAE and Kenya250INTL2

All three cover both landlines and mobiles in the included countries. The International add-on does not include Pakistan, which is why EE points Pakistan callers to International Extra.

International Pass rates for the six most-called countries

The Pass does not give you minutes. It lowers the per-minute price, and each country has its own discounted rate. EE lists these on the country pages:

  • India: 3p a minute
  • USA: 3p a minute
  • Poland: 8p a minute
  • Ireland: 12p a minute
  • Nigeria: 15p a minute
  • Pakistan: 21p a minute

The fine print worth knowing

  • Calls are capped at 120 minutes each. EE's terms say you must redial after two hours on the add-on plans.
  • Once your bundle minutes run out, standard rates apply. On International or International Extra, minute 501 (or 251) is charged at the £4.64 rate for long-haul countries.
  • International Extra has a number limit. EE's Pakistan page says it covers calls to up to 5 numbers a month.
  • Special numbers are excluded. Premium rate and other non-geographic numbers abroad are not covered by any add-on.
  • Timing rules are unclear. EE's terms say the packs can be added to any plan, but also mention adding them in the first three months of a contract. If the EE app will not let you add one, call 150 and ask.

To find the best add-on for a country, text CALL followed by the country name to 150 (for example, CALL ITALY). EE replies with the add-on it recommends and the price.

What a 10-minute call costs

Here is a single 10-minute call from the UK. The add-on columns ignore the monthly fee, so remember to add it: £2.50 for the Pass, or the full £15 or £30 if this is your only call that month. BoraPhone prices are in US dollars per minute at the time of writing (October 2026) and are shown before every call.

India£46.40£15.0030p$1.11 / $1.11
Pakistan£46.40£15.00£2.10$3.50 / $4.00
Nigeria£46.40£15.00£1.50$5.10 / $5.20
USA£46.40£10.0030pfrom $0.40
Poland£2.50£1.8080p$0.70 / $1.60
Ireland£2.50£1.80£1.20$1.11 / $2.10

The honest reading of this table:

  • If you are on EE pay monthly and call abroad every month, buy the International Pass. At £2.50 plus a few pence a minute, it is the cheapest per-minute option in this table for India, Pakistan and Nigeria.
  • If you call one country for hours, check a minutes bundle. 500 minutes to India or the USA for £15 is about 3p a minute, the same as the Pass, so it only wins if you would otherwise use more than about 400 Pass minutes.
  • Never call long-haul on pay monthly with no add-on. £46.40 for a 10-minute call to India is the most expensive option on this page by a wide margin.

A month of calls: two hours to India

Say you call family in India for 30 minutes every Sunday, about 120 minutes a month:

  • EE pay monthly, no add-on: 120 x £4.64 = £556.80
  • EE pay as you go: 120 x £1.50 = £180
  • EE pay monthly with the International Pass: £2.50 + (120 x 3p) = £6.10
  • EE pay monthly with the International add-on: £15 (120 of your 500 minutes)

On pay monthly, the Pass is the clear winner at that volume.

Pay as you go: the £3 bundles

EE says its pay as you go standard rates are pre-loaded on the SIM, so you can top up and call straight away. For regular calls, EE's pay as you go help page lists two add-ons, as of October 2026:

  • Rest of World minutes, £3: 100 minutes for 30 days to the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, Japan, Singapore, Argentina, China, Chile, Peru and Ecuador. Text IDD WORLD to 150.
  • EU minutes, £3: 100 minutes for 30 days to 27 EU countries, including Ireland and Poland. Text IDD EU to 150.

India, Pakistan and Nigeria are not in either bundle. On pay as you go, those calls cost £1.50 a minute, so a 10-minute call to Lahore is £15. Ireland and Poland are in the EU bundle: £3 for 100 minutes is 3p a minute, against 18p without it.

About the 34p connection charge

EE's country pages say "There is a 34p connection charge for all international calls", which is easy to read as a mobile charge. On those pages each country has three tabs: Pay Monthly, Pay As You Go and Home Broadband. The 34p line sits under the Home Broadband tab, next to the rates for calls from an EE home phone (for India, £1.07 a minute plus 34p). The pay monthly and pay as you go mobile rates are shown without a connection charge. If you call abroad from an EE landline, add 34p to every call. If your mobile bill shows a connection charge, ask EE on 150.

How to add or remove an EE international add-on

  1. By text: send the code from the table above to 150 (CALL ABROAD, 500INTL1 or 250INTL2).
  2. In the app: open the EE app, go to your plan's add-ons and choose the international option.
  3. By phone: call 150 from your EE mobile.

EE says all three can be cancelled at any time but does not publish separate removal steps, so cancel in the EE app or by calling 150. They renew every month, so if you only need one month, set a reminder to cancel before the next bill.

Dialling the number

Use the full international format: 00 (or +), the country code, then the number without its leading 0. Some examples:

  • India: 00 91 then the 10-digit number
  • Pakistan: 00 92 then the number without the 0
  • Nigeria: 00 234 then the number without the 0
  • USA: 00 1 then the 10-digit number
  • Poland: 00 48 then the 9-digit number
  • Ireland: 00 353 then the number without the 0

Saving contacts with a + in front means the same entry works from any country.

Calling abroad vs using your phone abroad

These are two separate price lists, and mixing them up is how people get surprise bills.

  • Calling abroad from the UK is what this article covers: you are in the UK and you ring a foreign number. The rates and add-ons above apply.
  • Roaming is when you take your EE phone abroad and use it there. Calls made while you are abroad follow EE's roaming rules, not the add-ons above. The International Pass and the minute bundles are for calls from the UK.

If you are travelling, see our guide to EE roaming charges and how to call the UK from abroad.

When EE is not the cheapest route

EE's add-ons are great value if you are an EE pay monthly customer who calls abroad every month. They are less useful if you are on pay as you go and call India, Pakistan or Nigeria, if you only make a call or two a year and do not want another monthly charge, or if you need to call from a laptop. In those cases a browser service like BoraPhone can be cheaper: you top up from $5, pay per minute (rounded up to the next minute) and see the rate before you dial. A 10-minute call to India costs $1.11, against £15 on EE pay as you go. It is not cheaper per minute than the International Pass to India, Pakistan or Nigeria, so if you are on pay monthly and call those countries every week, the Pass is the better deal.

Frequently asked questions

Does EE charge for international calls?

Yes. Calls from the UK to other countries are not part of EE's standard UK allowances. On pay monthly, long-haul countries such as India and the USA cost £4.64 a minute without an add-on, while most of Europe costs 25p a minute. On pay as you go, standard rates are lower.

How do I activate international calls on EE?

You do not need to sign up to anything to call abroad: without an add-on, EE simply charges its standard rate. To get cheaper rates, text CALL ABROAD to 150 for the £2.50 International Pass, or 500INTL1 or 250INTL2 for the minute bundles. You can also add them in the EE app or by calling 150.

Is the EE International Pass worth £2.50?

If you make even one long-haul call a month on pay monthly, yes. A single 10-minute call to India without it costs £46.40, and with it the same call costs 30p plus the £2.50 monthly fee. If you only call Europe occasionally, the saving is small, because standard rates there are already 25p a minute.

How do I block international calls on EE?

EE offers call barring at no charge, and you can switch it on or off in your phone's call settings. Barring can stop outgoing international calls, which is useful on a child's phone. EE's call barring help page links to guides for each handset.
