What UK networks actually charge for calls abroad

The standard rate is the trap. On EE's pay-monthly plans a call to the US, India, Pakistan, Nigeria or Australia is £4.64 a minute unless you have bought an add-on first. Pay-as-you-go is cheaper per minute for some countries (43p to the US, £1.07 to India) but adds a 34p connection charge to every call, so a two-minute call to India costs £2.48. Near neighbours are the exception: Ireland and Poland are 25p a minute on pay monthly and 18p on pay-as-you-go.

Add-ons fix the per-minute price if you remember to buy them and they cover the country you need. EE's International Pass drops the US and India to 3p a minute, Poland to 8p, Ireland to 12p, Nigeria to 15p and Pakistan and Australia to 21p, for a monthly fee. If you call one of those countries for hours every month, that is a good deal and we say so below. Vodafone, O2 and Three publish their own rates through country checkers and sell similar bolt-ons; check the mobile rate as well as the landline rate, because they often differ.

When a bundle beats pay-as-you-go, and when it does not

Keep the carrier add-on if

  • You call one country for several hours a month and its add-on rate is lower than the live rate above.
  • You mostly call from a mobile with no reliable Wi-Fi or data.
  • You will remember to cancel it when your calling pattern changes.

Pay per minute with BoraPhone if

  • You call several countries, or call rarely: birthdays, a bank, a hotel, a doctor.
  • You want the exact price on screen before you dial and nothing that renews.
  • You are on a laptop or at a desk anyway. The call runs in the browser tab.

How to dial abroad from the UK

From a UK landline, dial 00, then the country code, then the number without its leading 0 in most countries. From a mobile, or in BoraPhone, replace the 00 with +. The US and Canada are +1 followed by the 10-digit number; Ireland is +353; India +91; Pakistan +92; Poland +48; Australia +61; Nigeria +234.

Two exceptions catch people out. Italy keeps the leading 0 on landlines (+39 06 for Rome). Spain, Poland, Portugal and Greece have no leading 0 to drop, so dial the number exactly as written locally. Every country page on this site shows the format with an example.
